Ratchedemix in action
RatchedeMIX is a culturally grounded educational framework that uses hip hop culture — music, lyricism, storytelling, identity, and social commentary — as a vehicle for academic engagement and critical consciousness. It is about reclaiming narratives, centering youth voice, and making learning powerful.
Hip Hop Pedagogy is more than playing music in the classroom. It is a rigorous, research-backed educational approach that draws on the four foundational elements of hip hop culture — MCing, DJing, graffiti art, and breakdancing — along with the fifth element of knowledge, to create learning environments where students are active participants in constructing meaning. Rooted in the work of scholars like Dr. Christopher Emdin, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, and Dr. Gloria Ladson-Billings, Hip Hop Pedagogy recognizes that the cultural practices of hip hop — wordplay, sampling, cyphering, battling, and storytelling — are intellectual practices that mirror the highest forms of academic thinking.
